Business Situation:

Our client is a one billion dollar manufacturer in pharmaceuticals products used to treat chronic diseases such as heart disease, asthma, arthritis, and cystic fibrosis. It’s products are currently unique to the market.

A new law will be instilled in 2011 that will require serial numbers on each individual package of pharmaceutical products. Our client’s products are manufactured in bulk processes. After manufacturing the vats are trucked to our clients’ headquarters to be packaged in their individual dosage containers. There are two processes, the fill/finish and the packaging process. After individual doses are packaged, each package is labeled and inserted into an individual dose carton. Finally, cases of these cartons are shipped to the customer.

You have been asked to help the company develop a strategy so that they can begin serializing all of their products. The client is looking for an interim serialization solution until their new facility is online in one year.

1. What are the benefits of adding a serial number to each dose of the product?

2. One of the main drivers to develop, select, and implementation strategy is cost. What steps would you take to serialize all products within this one year period?

3. For each option, access the clients total costs (including initial capital investment to serialize the product between the one year period before it is done online)
